Winferd "Winnie" McFarland, 91, of Winner, SD passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Winner. Burial will follow at Winner City Cemetery. He was born May 18, 1923 in rural Tripp, South Dakota, to Elmer and Joella (VanMatre) McFarland Leat. Winnie had one sister, Cecile Nankivel, and one bother, Lester. Winnie lived in the Winner area until 1931 when his family moved to Codat, WI. The family lived there for two years then moved back to Winner after his father's death. Joella married Frank Leat and they continued to raise Winnie in Winner. During his high school years, he met MacRee (Cree) Chapman, whom he later married in 1946. He was married for 63 years until Cree's death in 2010. He was blessed with three children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Winnie served his country in WWII from 1944 until 1946. He was in England and France during his tour. He came back to Winner and worked for Taggart's Service Station, then became a mail carrier delivering from Winner to Hamill for several years including the Blizzard of 1952. He then went on to be a custodian at the Winner Post Office. He was employed there until his retirement in 1988. Winnie was a very active member of the Winner United Methodist Church, where he was a board member and "care taker" of the Church. He was a troop leader for the Winner Boy Scouts of America, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Winnie always said he had a "Wonderful" family. He spent many hours taking them on fishing trips, boating on the Missouri River and vacations. He was always tinkering in his workshop making woodwork treasures and paintings that he gave to the family and friends. He and Cree purchased a cabin in the Black Hills and spent many wonderful years improving it and enjoying time with family and friends at "the" cabin. The family knows him as the "great-grand-glorious" Grandpa. His numerous friends called him "MAC". Winnie is survived by his children, Vicki (Byron) Foreman, Winner SD, Linda (Jim) Engel, Norfolk NE, Gary (Luanne) McFarland, Billings MT, eight grandchildren; Wade (Kim) Foreman, Dana (Kristi) Foreman, Michelle Engel, Michael (Becky) Engel, Scott (Kate) Engel, Jennifer (Yuchol) McFarland Kim, Nichole McFarland and Kristen McFarland. He also had six great-grand children, Madilyn, Abigail and Gracie Foreman, Allison and Logan Kim and Liam Foreman. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, brother, wife and infant son.
