Wayne Keith Nelson, 65 of Sioux Falls, SD, formally of Winner, SD passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 11:00am at the First Christian Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Bloomington Cemetery near Platte, SD. Wayne Keith Nelson left this world peacefully and without regret on October 5, 2014 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota aged 65 years. He was born on January 20, 1949 in Parkston, South Dakota to Selmer and Nadine (Barriger) Nelson. Wayne often related he was born in the middle of a blizzard and arrived at the hospital only after his dad and his uncle, Harold Pavlis, cleared miles of snowdrifts. He graduated from Winner High School in 1967 and attended the University of South Dakota, returning to Winner to partner with his father in Nelson Farming. Wayne, a life-long farmer growing wheat, sunflowers, milo and soybeans, held leadership positions in organizations advocating for rural America. These included South Dakota Wheat Inc. (president 1978-80), National Association of Wheat Growers (president 1982-83), National Association of Wheat Growers Foundation (president 1985-89), and Communicating for Agriculture (board member and president 1993-his retirement in 2012). As a child, Wayne and his siblings were often told to use good table manners because "you never know when you will eat with the president." In Wayne's case this was true because his leadership positions allowed him to spend substantial time in Washington DC where he did indeed dine with presidents. His work and their great sense of adventure allowed Wayne and Pat to travel the world. They were grateful and felt very fortunate to have been able to do so much together. His kindness, generous smile, quick wit, unfailing optimism, wisdom, and accommodating personality will be missed by all who knew him. Wayne is survived by his wife, Pat Nelson of Sioux Falls (formerly of Winner, South Dakota), children Julie (Carlos) Cornay of Yankton, Tim Falencik of Minneapolis, Patrick Falencik of Winner, Joy Falencik of Sioux Falls and grandsons Tanner (Lauren) Cornay of Sioux Falls, Jordan (Melissa) Cornay of Omaha, Will Cornay of Vermillion, great-grand-daughter, Kate Cornay, sister Janice (Larry) Killian of Lubbock, Texas and brother Jim (Pam) Nelson of McAllen, Texas, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a myriad of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Selmer and Nadine Nelson of Winner, South Dakota. The family of Wayne Nelson will be directing memorials to the National Parkinson's Foundation.
