Verloyn Bettcher, 92, of Winner, SD, joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD
Verloyn Dean Bettcher was born on August 3, 1934, in Winner, SD, to August and Christina (Kershman) Bettcher. He was the youngest of seven siblings. He attended grade school in Dallas, SD, and graduated from Winner High School in 1953. In 1957, he was drafted into the Army, where he served for two years.
On July 26, 1964, Verloyn married the love of his life, Linda Storm, in Winner, SD. Together, they were blessed with four children. Verloyn worked in the retail business for over 60 years. He was employed at every major grocery store in Winner. Through his years of work, he had the opportunity to meet and get to know many wonderful people throughout the Winner area.
Verloyn’s greatest joy was his family. He treasured the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He and Linda also loved traveling and making memories together. Their travels took them across much of the United States, including Hawaii, as well as to many places around the world, including Spain, Venezuela, Portugal, Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean islands, including Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands.
Verloyn was one of the original members of the Tripp County Historical Society, joining in 1970, and remained very active in the organization throughout his life. He had a genuine appreciation for the history of the area and took pride in helping keep the community’s history alive. In the early 2000’s, he came up with the idea of turning the back part of the main museum building into an early-day Main Street.
He also enjoyed visiting antique shows, craft shows, and flea markets, where he found many treasures to add to his collection of antiques over the years.
Verloyn is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Linda; daughter Tammy (Larry) Scholz; sons Tim Bettcher, Troy Bettcher, and Tony Bettcher (Stacy), all of Winner, SD; grandchildren Dustin Aasheim, Ashley (Jimmy) Sharping, and Samuel Scholz; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Christina Bettcher; two sisters, Ida (Frank) Vedral and Martha (Sam) Hauff; and four brothers, Allen (Ruth), Alfred (Frieda), Richard (Teresa), and Leonard Bettcher.
