Velda Elaine
Kindt
Dec 11, 1931 — Jan 8, 2019
Velda Kindt, 87, of Winner, SD passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, January 8 th , 2019 at the Winner Regional Health Care Center in Winner. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1:00PM at the United Methodist Church in Winner. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Winner from 6-7PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:00PM.
Velda was born December 11, 1931, in her grandparents' home in Millboro, SD. Her parents were Walt and Wanita (Painter) Phillips.
She lived in the Winner area for almost all of her life, attending Winner High School through the 11 th grade. But in 1947 she met the love of her life Carl, and after a short engagement, was married in Papillion Nebraska, January 22, 1948. To the union 3 children were born, daughters Carliss (Joe) Meyers of Rapid City, South Dakota, Linda (Jim) Brozik of Winner, and son Wayne (Shelley) Kindt, also of Winner.
Carl and Velda lived and farmed and began to raise their family 10 miles southwest of Winner. There, she became active in the farming community, holding offices in the Extension Clubs, interacting with other farm wives, and involving her children in 4-H projects. Also involving her faith, she was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
In 1967 Carl and Velda moved into Winner during the Winter months and then in a few years they settled into a permanent home. This afforded her the opportunity to become active in ESA, the VFW, and the Quilt Guild. Quilting was a passion which grew from her incredible talent for sewing. In the 80's she and a partner opened "Fabric Plus", which allowed her to share her gifts with others.
After Carl passed in 1995, she made the decision to sell her home in Winner and design a new house just outside of town. She purchased the land and began to build the home that she would live in very nearly the rest of her life. The home encompassed her vision and artistic gifts, and complemented her unique taste for design. This home was uniquely Velda, and became the central hub and meeting place for her entire family.
In addition to her children, Velda is survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
She will eternally rest beside her husband Carl. Others preceding her in death were her mother and father, Walt and Wanita Phillips, mother and father in law, Paul and Evelyn Kindt, and two infant granddaughters.
