Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Tom Mayes, age 58, of Dallas, SD will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will be at the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-7 PM at the church with a 7pm prayer service. Thomas Edward Mayes was born November 17, 1956 in Winner, SD to Donna (Bailey) and George Mayes joining his two older brothers, Fred & Don at home on the family farm at Ideal. He was the big brother to siblings, Carol, Maxine, John, JoAnn and Amy. Tom grew up on the farm working with his parents and siblings in the milking barn and fields. He attended grade school at Star Valley and the Ideal Schools and graduated from Winner High School in 1975. He was active in 4-H, baseball, basketball and football and was a member of the WHS rodeo club. He married Lauren Schmidt on October 8, 1977 and they lived and worked at his parents farm at Ideal for four years. They were the proud parents of daughter Holly and sons, Jay and Terry. Later they moved to the Winner area and farmed for Lauren's father. Tom worked at various jobs including a construction crew in Nebraska, the NRCS for 3 years, he purchased and farmed his parents farm for a time, later he owned his own spraying business for 15 years, working with his sons. He later managed the Soil Center at the Cenex in Gregory and was most recently employed as a sales agronomist at the Country Pride in Winner. Tom's love of sports was an important part of his life, he volunteered as coach for both basketball and baseball and served as a high school football referee for 25 years. Tom took pride in his children and grandchildren and loved to tease them, he had a big heart and great sense of humor. He enjoyed going fishing and playing ball with his grandkids. Tom loved sports and also enjoyed watching the Twins, Dodgers and Nebraska Corn Huskers. Tom passed away on his farm November 28, 2014. He left behind his wife Lauren, daughter, Holly (Randy) Pechota and Abby and Kaden of Colome, sons, Jay (Holley)Mayes and Kelcie of Vermillion and Terry Mayes of Winner, siblings: Fred Mayes of Kenebec, Don (Cathy) Mayes of Winner, Carol (Wayne) Cooper of Spokane, WA, Maxine (Jim) Fisher of Winner, John Mayes of Witten, JoAnn (Myron) Giddings of Aurora, CO, Amy Duxbury of Huron, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins and many foster children. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Donna and George Mayes and father-in-law Paul Schmidt.
