Samuel Dennis Cole, 79, of Winner, SD passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD due to complications from Parkinson's disease. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 11:00AM at the 1 st Baptist Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the funeral.
Sam was born September 25, 1939, in Winner, SD. Growing up he lived at Witten, Wood, Carter and Winner with parents Harry and Kathryn Martensen Cole, along with six siblings.
While going to high school he stayed with his grandparents, David and Jessie Cole, in Witten. He graduated from Witten High School in 1957.
Sam was enlisted in the U.S. Navy from September 1957 til June 30 th , 1963, when he was honorably discharged. While in the Navy, he trained at Fleet Sonar School, in Key West, Florida.
He married Darlene Fudge and to this union five children were born.
Sam worked for various employers before going to work at the hospital where he worked in several departments. While doing janitorial work, he started studying to be a respiratory therapist. He completed his studies and became a Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician on December 4, 1982. He also worked for Lincare delivering oxygen to many customers.
Sam met Eunice while they were both working at the hospital. December 15, 1987, Sam married Eunice Orel in the chapel of the Winner Baptist Hospital. They just celebrated their 31 st wedding anniversary. He retired from the Winner Regional Hospital in September 2016 due to his health. He took great pride in his work at the hospital and got many compliments on his shiny floors.
Sam enjoyed time spent with his family. He was an outdoorsman, loved working in his garden, enjoyed putting up hay, took drives in the country, loved bird watching, liked taking pictures, built and refurbished wood projects.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Eunice; his children, Denise Ramerez (Carver, MN), Jeffrey Cole (Laramie, WY), Thomas Cole (Sturgis, SD), Lynette (James) Enriquez (Spring, TX), Karmella (Mike) Kearny (Crystal, MN); step children Kevin (Darla) Orel (Winner, SD), Vickie (Brent) Sprouse (Canyon, TX), Bill (Kara) Orel (Minden, IA); siblings, Connie (Don) Powell (Mitchell, SD), Doris (Dick) Morgan (Helena, MT), Janice (Dale Knoll) McAllister (Sedalia, MO), Alice Konvalin Grohs (Winner, SD), Lyle (Bonnie) Cole (Mitchell, SD), Joyce (Clint) Breisch (Newcastle, NE); eight grandkids and nine great grand kids; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Kathryn Cole; in-laws Lyle and Hazel Kyler; many aunts and uncles; and a niece and a nephew.
