Obituary

Ruth Marie (Sharer) Heying, 89, of Winner, SD passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 5th, 2014 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 4th, 2014 from 5-7pm at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Christian Wake Liturgy beginning at 7:00pm. Ruth was born on a stormy August 8, 1924 to John J. and Nellie A. (Krebs) Sharer. The intensity of the electrical rain storm forced the doctor to take shelter at a neighboring homestead, arriving after her birth to pronounce mother and baby were fine, he then quickly returned to town. Ruth grew up on her parent's farm south of Winner, attending the small country school with her two brothers, Jack and Bud, and her sister, Lois. She went to work at the Outlaw Trading Post her senior year at Winner High School where she worked until she married Gerald (Jerry) J. Heying on November 4th, 1943. They lived on their farm near Hamill, SD where they raised their seven children, large gardens, crops, pigs, chickens and a few cattle. She was an active member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society. Her large and beautiful flower garden regularly provided fresh cut flowers for the church side altars. She often worked wild flowers into her arrangements to add even more variety. She was also an active member and officer of the Hamill Extension Club. She enjoyed sewing clothes, making a lot of clothes for herself and her children. She also baked and decorated special occasion cakes for many family celebrations. Since Jerry did custom sharpening over much of SD and NE he was away a lot and Ruth and the kids kept things going on the farm. In 1977 they retired from farming and moved to Winner where she once again went to work for the Outlaw Trading Post until retiring for good in 1996. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, the General Federation of Women's Club, and a life time member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth had a wonderful sense of humor, quick smile and enjoyed the lively nature of her large family. The annual "Heying Family Pheasant Hunt" was a special time for all. Family was the center of her life. She will leave a large void for all her loved ones but also a large legacy of love and caring. Ruth is survived by her children, Carol (Jerry) Earll of Valentine, NE, Ed Heying of Lathrop, MO, David (Jeanine) Heying of Witten, SD, Jerry (Mick) Heying of Hot Springs, SD, Nell (Larry) Heying-Ryno of Wood, SD, Lee (Jane) Heying of Winner, SD and Bradley Heying of Lead, SD and a host of grandchildren and great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald (Jerry) Heying, her parents John and Nellie Sharer, her sister and brother -in-law Lois and Roland Petersen, her brothers John (Jack) and Bernard (Bud) Sharer, granddaughters Jennifer and Melissa Heying, great grandson Damian Koenig, and daughters-in-law Mary Heying, Donna Heying and Jayne Heying.
