Obituary

Ralph Sachtjen, 91, of Winner, South Dakota passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility in Winner, SD. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 10:30am at the First Christian Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, from 5-7pm with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm at the First Christian Church. Ralph Wesley Sachtjen was born August 16, 1922 on the farm south of Winner. His parents were Frank and Ida Beckner Sachtjen. He lived all his life south of Winner. He attended 7 1/2 years at South Crystal Springs grade school. Ralph graduated 8th grade at Clairmont School. Ralph worked at home helping his dad on the farm until he entered the service in March 30, 1945. He spent time in the Philippines and Tokyo, Japan during his time in the service. He was a mail clerk for General MacArthur. Ralph returned from the service in October 1946 and was discharged December 2, 1946. Ralph married Lois MayBelle Bromwich on March 3rd, 1945 at the Methodist church in Winner. After his discharge from the Army, Ralph and Lois lived southwest of Winner until February 1951 when they moved to their present home. He spent his life farming, helping his neighbors and mechanic work. He was on the school board for nine years. He continued helping his son Cecil on the farm until he was 90 years old. Some of Ralph's hobbies included fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ralph is survived by his wife Lois, by his children Jane and Dennis Souhrada of Sioux Falls, Gail and Marlene of Fort Morgan, CO., Cecil and Cathy of Winner and Donna and Larry Havranek of O'Neill, NE. Also 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter, his brother, Leslie of Burke, a sister-in-law, a cousin and a host of nieces and nephews. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ida, brothers Bob, Albert and sisters Marie and Alice, a grandson, 2 great-grandsons and nephew.
