Martin (Marty) Joseph Kendrick Jr., 29, of Winner, SD passed away on Tuesday, April 8th, 2014 at Chips Hospital in Malaga, Spain. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 19th, 2014 at 10:00am at the United Methodist Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. There will be a visitation held on Friday, April 18th from 5-7:00pm at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. Martin "Marty" Joseph Kendrick Jr. was born March 25, 1985 in Syracuse, New York to Debra (Bertram) and Martin Kendrick Sr. At the age of one, the family moved to Winner, SD, where Marty enjoyed spending time with his dad. He loved playing baseball and spent a lot of time playing with Bill and Len Wonnenberg and playing all sports throughout his school days. Marty attended Winner schools and graduated in 2003. After high school Marty attended college at USD in Vermillion and Colorado Tech in Sioux Falls. While living in Sioux Falls, Marty juggled school while working for Fed Ex. After leaving Sioux Falls, Marty moved back home to Winner. In 2006, he began work at the Winner City Jail as a Corrections Officer. Marty was great at working with all different types of people in many different situations. There he made lifelong friendships and memories. While Marty enjoyed the work at the jail he aspired to become a police officer, but due to cancer, it slowed the process of that goal becoming a reality. The Winner Police Department appointed Marty as a Winner Police Officer posthumously. This was his lifelong dream. Marty was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. He underwent surgery in July and continued numerous treatments over the years. Even though Marty traveled often for treatments he always managed to put family first. Through his battle with cancer Marty had good days and bad, he always had the "Never Give Up" attitude and maintained his upbeat and positive outlook. He never let cancer get the best of him. In 2010, Marty started attending Men's Group where his relationship with the Lord grew and his faith flourished. Marty gave his life to the Lord and trusted in Him with everything he was. Marty enjoyed life and understood everyday he was given was a blessing and a gift from God. Marty met his soul mate, Chelsea Brozik, in 2009 while working at the police department. They were united in marriage on July 15, 2012; and in this union he gained a son, Owen. Marty fought cancer everyday to spend as much time as possible with his family. He was a devoted husband and father. Marty was an amazing dad and was looking forward to the time when Owen would be old enough to teach him the rules and all about his love for the game of baseball. God called Marty home on April 8, 2014 while undergoing treatment in Malaga, Spain. Marty enjoyed many things such as riding his motorcycle with his friends, attending Men's Group, Syracuse University basketball and playing and coaching baseball. Marty always joked with Chelsea that if God blessed them with more children she was not allowed to go into labor during "March Madness" unless the delivery room had a TV to watch the Syracuse game. Marty began coaching club ball in 2010 and committed his time and effort into encouraging every player that stepped onto the field to better themselves on and off the field. Even though he wasn't head coach this year, he still had the desire to attend every practice possible and aid the team in whatever way he could. Marty is survived by his Wife, Chelsea and Son, Owen of Winner; Mother Deb Kendrick of Winner, Grandfather Guy Bertram of Winner, Grandmother Ann (Bill) Campbell of Syracuse, NY, Uncle Duane (Nikie) Bertram, Kirby, Kyle, and Kelsey of Winner; Uncle Tom Kendrick, Megan and Tommy of Shirley, Massachusetts; Uncle Dennis (Kim) Kendrick and DJ of Pyongyang Taek, South Korea; Uncle Don Kendrick and James and John of Sumter, South Carolina; and Uncle Bob (Sue) Kendrick Eric, Brooke of Syracuse, New York, mother-in-law Sue Brozik of Gregory, SD, sister-in-law Amanda Brozik and special friend Brady Hanson, Jocelyn of Springfield, SD, sister-in-law Caitlin Brozik, Emma, Gideon of Gregory, SD. Marty was preceded in death by his Father Martin Kendrick Sr.; Grandmother Marie Bertram and Grandfather Don Kendrick and father-in-law Lonnie Brozik.
