Martin Sidney high Rock, Jr., date of birth is August 13m, 1937. My mother is Rebecca Hero/Shield/High Rock, my grandfather is Ptesanwicasa AKA Adam Hero, and my great-grandmother is Yuhamaniwin AKA Julia Hero.
I was born along side the Missouri River where my parents, Sidney High Rock and Rebecca Hero/High Rock lived for many years, at White Swan, South Dakota. We lived about two miles northwest of the Missouri River. We would haul water from the Missouri River back to the house for cooking and drinking. My father also owned an outhouse, a plow, grass and wee cutter and a buggy.
We all went to school in Pickstown, South Dakota, but we all had to walk 2 miles or more every day. From there, we moved to Murphy's Cabins in Winner, South Dakota because my father was again hired at Surgis which was a skinning hide and fur company. I attended the second grade at this time at the Winner Elementary School in Winner, SD.
We then moved into a canvas tent behind my sister Pauline King's house in Winner, South Dakota, so we could attend school. We lived there for about three to four years.
I met Ramona Ringing Shield in 1954, in Winner. I served the National Guards here in Winner, and was discharged on November 2, 1956, after three years of service.
In 1965, we all moved to Fargo, North Dakota where I was enrolled in auto mechanics trade school. I always worked various odd jobs, construction jobs, and we all even lived in tents along a lake in Greenwood, South Dakota for the summer, which my children all enjoyed very much. Swimming and fishing all the time. With my schooling, I was hired as a mechanic at Miller Brothers here in Winner, SD. I kept that position for about twenty-five years. Martin also worked as BIA policeman for Winner/Ideal communities from 1979-1981.
On August 17, 1993, I did lab work and the outcome at that time was prostrate caner. I had radiation treatments at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota once a week for six weeks in August, of 1993.
On July 27, 2015, Martin lost his loving wife of 60 years to cancer and kidney failure, this has been very devastating for him and shortly after in August 2016, martin had a stroke. Due to this health issue, he had to be admitted into the Winner Regional Long Term Care Center.
Martin had 5 children: Bonnie and Robert Black Feather of Winner, SD, Ronald High Rock Sr. of Aberdeen, SD, Shirley and Harold Groskruetz of Minneapolis, MN, Brenda High Rock of Winner, SD and Lonnie High Rock of Minneapolis, MN and Martin also had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Martin's hobbies were fishing, hunting, fixing cars, gambling, eating at the casino, listening to classic country music and cooking out. He enjoyed being around family and friends.
Martin is preceded in death by is parents Rebecca Hero/High Rock and Sidney High Rock, his wife Ramona Ringing Shield-High Rock, his sisters; Pauline King, Alica Brandis, Susie High Rock and brother Sylvan High Rock.
