Martha Haukaas, 94, of Okreek, SD passed away on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024 at the Edgewood Spearfish Senior Living in Spearfish, SD. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024 at 10:00AM at the Calvery Episcopal Church in Okreek, SD. Burial will follow in the Calvery Episcopal Cemetery in Okreek, SD. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 4th, 2024 from 3-5PM at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD.

Martha Cleveland (Lambert) Haukaas, beloved daughter of Guy Lambert and Nancy (Little Money) Lambert passed at the age of 94 on February 27, 2024 in Spearfish, SD. She is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters and many beloved cousins.

For many years Martha and her husband Lloyd Haukaas made their home and raised their children in Vermillion.

Later, as a single mother, Martha worked at a local dry cleaner and then as a nurse's aide at the Vermilion Nursing Home. She dearly loved working with the elderly residents of the Home. Continuing her education Martha enrolled at the University of South Dakota and worked as a counselor to the Indigenous students in the Upward Bound Program. Her work with the students was a joy for her and earned the love and respect of her colleagues and students. Martha also worked as a counselor at the Woodfield Center for Adolescents and Orphans in Beresford. She found her greatest love and enjoyment working with youth.

In her later years Martha moved to Sturgis to live closer to her son David and his family, and daughter Donna.

Martha is remembered lovingly by her children's friends, one remembering her as a "legend ".

Martha is survived by her daughters, Priscilla (John) Caverly of Tucson AZ, Donna Haukaas of Sturgis SD, sons David (Tonya) Haukaas of Belle Fouche SD, Patrick Karl Carter of Sequim, WA, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha found pleasure and inspiration in nature, rocks, animals and birds.
