Obituary

Mabel Sharkey, 96, of Winner, SD, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility in Winner, SD. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 1st, 2014 from 6-7pm with a Rosary beginning at 7:00pm at the Catholic Church. Mabel was born near Carlock, SD to Barbara (Chamber) and August Intorn on May 2, 1917. At a young age she moved with the family to a farm south of Colome, attending rural school, helping with the farm work, and raising her siblings. For a short time attended high school at Millboro, but returned home to help with the work. Mabel also worked at the treasures office in Tripp County courthouse for a short time. On February 2, 1938 she was united in marriage to Steve Sharkey at Saint Boniface Rectory near Clearfield, SD. Soon after they went to the state of Washington to find work, settling near Yakima. While there daughter Beverly Ann was born and died in infancy. In the fall of 1940 they moved back to Tripp County settling on a farm nine miles east of Winner, working for Bill Hesse. They lived there for the next 48 years, eventually purchasing it from him. On October 18, 1947 Mabel was baptized and joined the Catholic Church. On October 30, 1947 she was confirmed by Bishop McCarty. Mabel's friend and neighbor Catherine Taggart was her Confirmation Sponsor. In 1988 she and her husband purchased a home in Winner, Steve passed away in 1998. They were married for over 60 years. In 2007 Mabel sold her home and moved into the Elder Inn and enjoyed life there. Mabel then moved to the Long Term Care Facility in October of 2013, where she remained until her death. Mabel was dedicated to her family, community, and church. She helped start the Sully Homemaker Extension Club, was a VFW Auxiliary Member, and a life time member of the Catholic Daughters Court Mary Imelda #1014. She will be remembered for always greeting people and welcoming them into her home. As well as her passion for cooking for the pheasant hunters, harvest crew, and most of all of her loved ones. It was said that no one would leave her house hungry. Mabel is survived by her children; Delores (Virgil) Novotny, David (Nelda) Sharkey, Patricia (Frank) DeHaven, Thomas (Donna) Sharkey, Susan (Leslie) Stewart; her brother Roy and sister-in-law Helen Sharkey. Grandchildren: Mike (Coleen) Novotny, Cindy (Mike) Levi, Julie(Brad) Hennebold, Todd (Heidi) Novotny; Melinda (Brad) Schoonveld, Steven (Tina) Sharkey; Alynn Risseeuw; Tara (Mike) McCready, Tosja (Ken) Goodnight, Tosca (Nicholas) Ryan, Tessa (Jason) Jaton, Torey (Lindsey) Sharkey; Meggan (Glen) Brodrecht, Michael (Liz) Stewart, and Melissa (Wayne) Crawford. Great grandchildren: Tyler, Tiffany, Tanae; Michelle, Michael, Mckenzie; Chelsea, Elizabeth, Kristen, Luke; Otilia; Andrew, Cathleen; Emily, Antonio; Tanee, Colby; Jadyn; Kristen; Braydn, Evan; Haddie; Mataya; Carley, Carter; Taylor. Great- great grandchildren: Coltryn; Natalie; Bentley Preceeding in death are her husband Steve, infant daughter Beverly, and four year old son Duane; a premature grandson, a two month old granddaughter Dana Maria Stewart; her parents Barbara and Augustine; sisters Alvina Blize, Hilda Ulmer, Emma Dziadula, Arlene French, Ida Kaiser, Viola Kartak, and Lorraine Prochazka, one brother Henry.
