Obituary

Lester Foster, 88, of Winner, SD passed away on Friday, November 21, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility in Winner, South Dakota surrounded by his family. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD from 5-7p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm. Les, as he was commonly called, was born to Leonard and Ethel Foster on June 15, 1926 in Colome, SD. He was third of six children. Les grew up and worked in the Winner area until his enlistment in 1944 with the Navy. He served 2 years and was discharged from the service which brought him back to Winner where he drove gass and beer truck. In 1949 he met Viola Wiley and said "that's the girl I'm going to marry". On September 20, 1950 they were married. Out of this union were 4 children; Roger, Cindy, Lisa and Russ. Les and Vi resided in Winner until September 1958 when they moved to the family ranch. They would remain there for the next 51 years. Every May Les gave Vi a bouquet of wild flowers. Les expanded the ranch and did various jobs for cash flow, working as a sometime bartender, sorting cattle for the Presho Sale Barn or sledding hay. Les prided himself as a hard worker and being a family man. He never questioned his responsibility and shouldered it willingly and proudly. He raised cattle and always had a horse to sell. He loved to "horse-trade" always having a story to tell and never met a stranger. When his son Russ joined him on the farm they started milking and developed a grade A dairy for 18 years. As the family was growing up Les and Vi attended many a rodeo, trail ride and boxing matches. Moving and working cattle and "making hay" were important and enjoyable family activities. Dad made big, tight square stacks and the tightest, straightest fences we ever saw. He will be greatly missed.
