Leona Storms, 96, of Winner, SD passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Winner Regional Long-Term Care Center in Winner, SD.  Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 11:00AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.  Depart for St. Boniface Cemetery for burial at 1:30PM following the luncheon.

Leona Lavern Quick Storms was born  March 30, 1928 to Elmer and  Juliette (Schultz) Quick in their home in Tripp County, SD. The family moved to rural  Hot Springs, SD where she attended grade school. She recalled one time that the walk home from school was so cold that they stopped half way and built a fire to warm themselves up. She attended her early high school years in Sturgis, SD before they moved back to the Clearfield area, where she then graduated from Colome High School in 1946.

Leona taught grade school until her marriage to Donald Storms on December 27, 1948, to which 7 children were born. She went back to teaching school in 1968, and over a 10 year span, spent 10 weeks each summer earning her Bachelor's Degree in teaching at Southern State College in Springfield, SD. Even though she was gone during the week, she still managed to raise a huge garden and a couple hundred chickens each summer. She also cooked a big dinner every Sunday for the family before she headed back to Springfield for her week of classes. Her mother's failing health in 1990 prompted her decision to retire from teaching in 1990 so she could move her mother into their home so that she could care for her.

Leona's greatest joy was having the grandchildren spend the weekends at the farm with her, and cooking for our large family gatherings.

She is survived by her children, Anita, (Ken) Curtis, Dave (Shelley) Storms, Leon (Connie) Storms, Hugh (Toni) Storms, Carmen (Keith) Kaiser, Arnold (Deb) Storms, and Julie (Kent) Hossle, sisters Rita Carr, Carol Keogh, Connie (Bill) Porter, Sister-in-law Sharon Quick, brothers Pat (Cheryl) Quick, and Richard (Karen) quick, 20 grandchildren and spouses, 37 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father in–law Leonard and Mabel Storms, husband Donald, sisters and brother in-law Marie (Walt) Lamprecht, Donna (Frank) Magers, Donovan (Betty) Quick, Polly (Mel) Oster, Wilbert Quick, Sandy (Lyle) VanMatre and Ivan (Jeanne) Quick. Sisters in-law Mamie (Lloyd) Crane, Clara (Joe) Frank, Gen (Lloyd) Fast, Emerald (Jim) Diez, Cecilia (Raymond) Kartak, Mary (Martin) Jorgensen, and brothers-in-law Leo (Ruth) Storms, Frank Carr, Don Keogh, grandson Chase Edwin Storms and great granddaughter, Sophia Rae Storms.
