Lawrence J. Neyens, 96, of Winner, SD passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Colome City Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 from 6-7pm with the Christian Wake Liturgy beginning at 7:00pm at the Catholic Church. Lawrence J. Neyens was born at the family farm Northeast of Colome, August 21, 1918, to Pete and Carrie (Dohmen) Neyens. He was the third of six children. He attended rural schools in the Colome and Winner area, graduated from Winner High School in 1938. Lawrence attended Grand Island Business School for 2 years. In 1941, he received a civil service appointment and was employed as chief clerk in the engineering department at Fort Meade, SD until 1944 when the facility was closed. Lawrence was the last civilian to leave Fort Meade. In October of 1944 he was reassigned to the Soil Conservation Service as Office Clerk at the State SCS Office in Bozeman, Montana. In 1945 Lawrence returned to the farm South of Winner to work with his father, who was in ill health. In 1960 he moved to Winner with his parents. He continued to farm with his brothers James and Harold and nephew Ross up to his retirement in 2009. Lawrence was a member of the Saint Isidore Catholic Church in Colome and later at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and on the Board of Directors for the ASCS office for many years. He enjoyed traveling and toured many states in the USA and Canada. He is survived by his sister Alice (Darrell) Stewart of Sun City, AZ, Sisters-in-law Grace Ellen and Grace Jean Neyens of Winner, Nephews Ray Jr. (Rita) Neyens of Winner, Dennis (Diane) Neyens of Long Valley, SD, Ross and Lee Neyens of Winner, Lance (Linda) Stewart of Grand Junction, CO, Mark (Annette) Stewart of Rawlins, WY, and Leo (Mariann) Stewart of Gilbert, AZ, nieces Diana (Doyle) Stiefel of Renner, SD, Nancy Stewart of Peoria, AZ along with many grand nephews and nieces. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Carrie Neyens, and brothers Joe, Harold, Raymond, and James.
