John "Jack" Elder, 88 of Carter, passed away peacefully at his home on March 7, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will follow at the Winner Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 PM Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with a Prayer Service starting at 7:00 PM.

Jack was born on June 21st, 1928 in Winner, SD to John Melville and Elizabeth M. (Dougherty) Elder.  He attended St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church in Witten, SD throughout most of his life until the church closed and joined the Immaculate Conception Church in Winner, SD.

Jack attended schools in Progressive township (Red Hill) country school just a mile from his home and then attended Witten High School until his graduation.

After graduating from high school he stayed on the family farm north of Carter until the time of his death where he spent his life on the farm raising crops and cattle and attended most cattle auctions from Martin to Yankton and anywhere in-between.  He and his father raised registered Hereford cattle and also had a large feedlot for fat cattle.  Jack made many trips to Huron and Sioux City with butcher cattle.

On February 23rd, 1952 Jack married Gladys Hansen of Carter, and to this union three children were born: Gary, Tammie and Lori.

Jack was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, a school board member, township board, and was also a substitute rural mail carry out of Carter.

Jack is survived by his wife Gladys of 65 years, son Gary (Mary) Elder of Carter, Daughters: Tammie Elder of Winner, Lori (Doug) Kartak of Carter, 7 grandsons and 1 granddaughter; Zachary Elder of Portland, OR, Jeremy Elder of Carter, SD Abram Elder of Pierre, SD Joshua Elder of Carter, SD Tanner Elder of Carter, SD Brady Kartak of Mitchell, SD Chancey Kartak of Winner, SD, Fallon Kartak-Riedl of Mitchell, SD 3 great-grandchildren; Ryler Elder, Keasha Kartak and Levi Kartak, 2 sisters; Anna Jean Adel of Witten,SD and Avis (Clarence) Von Eschen of Minneapolis, MN, sisters-in-law; Ardith Francescato of Golden, CO, Adeline Vavra of Winner, SD, Helen Kirsch of Sturgis, SD, MargretAnn (John) Leetch of Black Hawk, SD, Karen Hansen of Winner, SD, cousins; Mary (Dougherty) Johnson and Wendell Elder and many nieces and nephews.

Jack is proceeded in death by his parents John M. and Elizabeth (Dougherty) Elder, grandparents Charles and Anna (Grossenburg) Elder, John and Mary (Fitzgerald) Dougherty, and infant brother Billy, nephew Duane Adel and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
