She was born on December 7th, 1944, to Charles White Hawk and Yvonne Jaros White Hawk. She is the oldest of 3 sisters, to include Sandy Lee White Hawk (Underwood, Iowa) and Sharon Kay White Hawk who precedes her in death. She grew up 6 miles North of Mosher, SD on the family ranch. She spent her whole life working hard to help expand the ranch to what it is today.
Jeanette attended school at a small country school near Mosher, SD for the first few years of schooling. Then went on the finish her high school years in Wood, SD. After graduating, she went on to attend art school at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Jeanette was a member of the very first graduating class of this art institute. Upon her return to South Dakota, she acquired a job as a teacher at Wood School, teaching young students Native American art as well as substitute teaching. Jeanette was a gifted artist and specialized in Native American bead work, painting, sketching, and various ceramic projects.
On April 2nd, 1969, she had her son Russell White Hawk. Then in 1973 she married John Moen and to this union a daughter, Gail Moen, was born June 12th, 1974. They resided at the ranch for several years and continued to work hard there. After Johns passing in 1991, Jeanette moved to Witten, SD where she lived with her partner Russell Dryer whom she is preceded in death by. After a short time in Witten, they moved back to the ranch where they spent the rest of their remaining years together.
In addition to all her accomplishments already mentioned, Jeanette was an avid and skilled hunter, trapper, and fisherman. She always has an open door, a pot of coffee, and a hunting story for anyone wanting to stop in. Jeanette was also a certified hunting guide for the White Hawk Hunting Guide Service. When Jeanette and her sister Sharon were not hunting for themselves, they were guiding for the family service. Although Jeanette always managed to keep the biggest white tail a secret for herself. Not only was Jeanette a skilled hunter and rancher, but she also grew an affinity for darts and went on to win many leagues and tournaments.
Jeanette was an animal lover her whole life. When she was a kid, she spent most of her time on horseback with her sisters. She also had many other pets, cats, and dogs throughout her life. Some to be remembered including her cat Tribble, her German Shepard Buddy and many more. Not only did she have a love for animals, but she never missed a chance to take one of her well-needed four-wheeler rides. When she was not working on the ranch, she loved taking long four-wheeler rides whether it was to scout for deer or to simply enjoy nature. One of her greatest loves was the beauty of the outdoors. Among some of her other joys included the holidays where everyone came together. She enjoyed cooking and baking for everyone like her famous pies, sugar cookies and fry bread.
Jeanette is survived by her sister Sandy Lee White Hawk and Sandy’s partner Jeff Andersen (Underwood, Iowa), her son Russell White Hawk (Mosher, SD), her daughter Gail Moen and Gail’s partner Marvin Gakin (Mitchell, SD), her grandchildren Russell Duley and Emaile Duley (Mitchell, SD) and her great grandchildren Victoria Rocha and Collin Dampier.
