Obituary

Helen Lookabill, 93, of Winner, SD passed away on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 2:00pm at the Wood Community Hall in Wood, SD. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Wood. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from 6-7PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner. Helen Lookabill was born on August 16, 1921 in Esmond, SD to Carl and Bertha Lager. Helen's mother died when she was two and was sent to live with relatives in Wakefield, NE. When she was seven, she moved back to live with her dad in Fedors, SD, where she attended and graduated high school in 1939. Helen answered an ad to care for the daughter of the Distads, long time teachers in Wood, SD. She packed her things and traveled by bus to take the job. This is where she met Dale Lookabill and they were married on December 1, 1942 in Pierre, SD. To this union one child was born. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Wood Women's Club, and UCC Church in Wood, SD. Helen enjoyed gardening, crocheting, bowling, golfing, taking bus tours to different parts of the U.S., and enjoying time with her granddaughter Carrie. In 1986, Dale and Helen moved to Winner, SD, and resided in their house until 2006 when they move into the Golden Prairie Manor. Upon poor health, Helen moved to the Winner Regional Heath Center. Helen is survived by her son Rodney (Cora) Lookabill of Wood, SD; her granddaughter Carrie (John) Kocer, great-grandchildren Dacey, Gabriel, and Browdy Kocer; her twin sisters Edna Baade and Edith Olson of Mitchell, SD, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Bertha Lager; brothers Charles and Elmer Lager; nephew Gary Lager, neice Mary Lager, brother-in-law Rex Baade and Otto Olson, and special friend Margaret Eklund.
