Helen Armstrong, 100, of Winner, SD passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility in Winner, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 10:00am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 7, from 6-7:00pm at the Catholic Church with a Rosary beginning at 7:00pm. Helen's belief in God and her Strong commitment to her Catholic faith molded her love of family and friends throughout her life. She was a wonder by family because in her childhood and high school years she always had some health issues and was never expected to live long, for sure not a century. Helen M. Armstrong was born November 23, 1914 to Martin and Gertrude Jorgensen on the homestead in Ideal SD. Her life on the farm was not very pleasant during the 30's due to the horrible drought, dust storms and grasshoppers. Helen was not much of an outdoor person because of it, so her brothers and sisters called her the "house cat". Helen received her elementary and secondary education at the Ideal school where she graduated in 1935. After graduation in 1935, her parents sent her to Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1936 she went to work for Farmer's Union Brokerage Co. This temporary job lasted six years. This company was sold to Farmers Union Central Exchange in St. Paul, MN. Helen stayed with her job and moved to St. Paul in 1942 and retired from that job in 1957. Helen met her love of her life Donald Armstrong, when he was sent to work as a chemist with the same company. They were married in 1950. Helen surprised herself in becoming an outdoors person, as Don loved to fish, camp, go boating, and cross country ski. She learned to enjoy it all. Helen and Don were determined to adopt a child and after five years of waiting, they found little Richard, who was 3 ½ years old. Richard enriched their lives and Helen became a stay at home Mom. Don and Helen purchased a home in Green Valley Arizona, and for a few years they split their summer and winter homes. In 1995 they permanently resided in Green Valley, AZ. Don passed away in May of 1999. Helen remained in her Arizona home until she moved to the Golden Prairie Manor in Winner, SD June of 2003 and in September of 2014 she moved to the Winner Regional Health Care Center where she resided until her death on January 2, 2015. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Martin Sr. and Gertrude Jorgensen, her husband of 49 years Don Armstrong, her brothers, Lee, Stanley and Don Jorgensen and a sister Marie Paul, four brother-in-laws Earl Paul, Ed O'Keefe, Art Cummins and Jack Bobick. She leaves her son Richard (Renee) Armstrong of Oklahoma City, OK. One brother Martin Jr. (Mary) Jorgensen, three sisters Ruth O'Keefe of Lakewood CO, Beth Cummins of St. Paul MN, Alice Bobick of Winner, SD, and one sister-in-law Fern Jorgensen of Sioux Falls, SD and many nieces and nephews. In Lieu of flowers Helen's memorial moneys will be donated to a local wounded warrior's project. A special thanks to Deb Jorgensen and the nurses and aids that took care of her.
