Guy Bertram, age 85, of Winner, passed away August 31, 2015 at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, September 4th, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Winner. Burial to follow at the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 3rd, 2015 at Mason Funeral Home in Winner with a prayer service starting at 8:00PM. Guy Robert Bertram was born south of Colome on the farm Oct. 25, 1929. He was the 5th boy out of 14 children born to Frank and Bertha (Mavis) Bertram. Guy and his siblings walked two and half miles to the Stewart Country School, where he attended through the 8th grade. When he was old enough he helped with the chickens, the cows, and the horses. His favorite saddle horse was Sally. He always said that he never did the milking, because that was the girl's job. He often talked about when they had to use horses to plow and put up hay. Guy was 14 years old when his dad bought his first tractor. It was a 1943 H-Farmall that cost $1200. He lit up when he told the story about going to Hamill with Harold to pick it up. In 1951, Guy and his dad were caught in a terrible blizzard as they had gone to try to pick the kids up from school. They took shelter in a cow barn and pitched hay all night to keep warm. Gus Weidner and Orris Shippy found them the next day. They followed the fence line through the drifts to make it back to Gus', where they feasted on pancakes. Sgt Guy Bertram entered the service April 14, 1953. He attended basic training at Ft. Chaffee Arkansas. He spent some time at Ft Riley in Kansas before going to Ft. Bragg North Carolina for his advanced training. April 15, 1955 he was honorably discharged from the 82nd Airborne Division. Guy was a hardworking man and had started hauling hay for people in the early 50's using an M Farmall tractor. In 1960 he met and married Marie Kalenda and to this union 2 children were born, Deb and Duane. Together, in 1966 they purchased a farm north of Colome from Pat and Colleen Taggart. In the 70's Guy purchased a haybuster and did custom work into the 1980's. Guy with the help of his family raised a variety of crops and also tended to both cattle and hogs for many years. One of his favorite things to do was to go out and pick corn in the fall. His passion was the farm that he had built up over the past 85 years. He had told us that his father was very proud of him for having his own farm. Not much would draw Guy away from the farm, but he would always make time during the holidays to spend quality time with his family. Some of the fondest memories of Guy were sitting around the table playing pitch, making this a Bertram family holiday tradition. Preceding him in death were his parents Frank and Bertha, his wife Marie, his son in law Marty Kendrick, and his grandson Marty Kendrick Jr. His brothers Willis, Allan, Richard, Harold, Bud and Vern, his sisters Erlene, Mildred, and Lois, His brother in laws Gus Ring, Albert Kaiser, Vaughn Smith, Bob Bigelow, Marlon Larsen, sister in laws Dorothy (Harold), Eris(Willis), Neva(Allan), Bonita(Vern). Guy is survived by his daughter Debra, Winner, son Duane (Nikie) Bertram Winner, grandchildren Kirby Georgia, Kyle Winner, and Kelsey Winner ; Brother Larry(Sherry) Bertram Colome, sisters Dorothy Bigelow Winner, Maxine Larsen Colome, Joyce Smith Lincoln, Ne.
