Wayne Holmes, 92, Winner, SD passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility. Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 at United Methodist Church, Winner at 10:30 am followed by burial in the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the Mason Funeral Home, Winner from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a prayer service starting at 7:00 pm. Gerald Wayne Holmes was born on August 19, 1921 to Hugh and Lizzie (Schrader) Holmes at Geddes, SD. Wayne attended Geddes Country School and Lonehill Grade School. In the early 1930's Wayne and his family moved to Todd County where he continued his education; graduating from Todd County High School in 1939. After graduation, Wayne moved to Chicago, Illinois as a welder's assistant until 1942 when he enlisted with the 507th Air Force in World War II from October 1942 until January 1946 when he received his honorable discharge on January 20, 1946 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He was on Ie Shima near Okinawa and witnessed the Japanese aircraft as they transferred to the US aircraft and flew to Manila to join President Truman and staff on board the Battleship Missouri to sign the Peace Treaty. After his discharge he moved to Winner, SD in February of 1946 where he worked for Grossenberg Implement. On August 3, 1947, Wayne was united in marriage to Delores Sell at the First Methodist Church, Winner. In May 1949 the couple moved to their farm in Todd County until the late 1950's. The family moved to Mission when Wayne became the branch manager for the Farmers Coop for 27 years; retiring in May 1984. In July 2001, Wayne and Delores moved to Winner. Wayne was a member of First Methodist Church in Winner from 1948 until 1958 then transferred to the Mission United Methodist Church when it started and was a chairman for the church for 16 years. He belonged to the Don Dorian Legion Post, Mission American Legion, Winner VFW, Mission Fire Department and the Rosebud Federal Credit Union. Wayne's greatest joy in life was his family - taking them camping, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed feeding the pheasants. Wayne is survived by his wife Delores, of Winner, children: Thomas (Kathy), of Watertown, SD, Douglas (JoAnn), of Mitchell, SD and Patsy (Scott) Carey, of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving Wayne is his brother Harlan (Judy) Holmes, of Orange, CA and numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen and her husband Clarence Russell, brother Paul and his wife Delores, brother Verl Holmes, nephew Roy Russell and two baby granddaughters.
