Obituary

Dwight Schaeffer, 88, of Winner, SD passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Facility in Winner, SD.  Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 11:00AM at the Winner United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service.

Dwight Lowell Schaeffer was born on a farm north of Wood, SD in Mellette County on December 2 nd , 1931 to Astrid Kristine Larson and Luther Lerenzo Schaeffer.  He attended grade and High School at Wood, SD graduating in May 1949.  Dwight enlisted in the United States Air Force in November of 1949.  After basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he went to Cheyenne Wyoming to take power line training.  In June of 1951 Dwight sailed for England.  He was stationed at Fairford Airbase and later at Stanstead Air Force Base, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Dwight married Mona Marie McDonald on December 13 th , 1952 in Dunmow Essex England.  Dwight asked his folks to sell his calves in the fall and send Mona the money for an airplane ticket to England.  Dwight and Mona lived in England until they received word in July of 1953 that Dwight's father was seriously ill.  With order to go home Dwight was discharged at Ellsworth Airforce Base in Rapid City, SD in September and was on reserve status for the next six years.

Dwight farmed, milked cows in early years and bred his cow herd into a purebred Limousin herd.  In October 1964 Dwight became an agent for the Mobil Oil Corporation, taking over for Lee McDonald (no relation).  In 1969 Dwight bought the business from Mobil and he and Mona became Schaeffer Oil Company.  In 1970 they bought out a Mobil distributer in Winner and moved to Winner.  In 1984 Dwight, Mona and sons Brian and Craig opened the Lil Feller Store in Winner, SD which is still operated by Brian.

In 1992, at the age of 61 Dwight and Mona moved to Tempe, Arizona where Dwight went back to school to study Physical Therapy and Massage Therapy.  Dwight opened his practice in Scottsdale AZ.  After volunteering a few days a week at Arizona State University in the athletic department he was hired by the University working with the college athletes.

Dwight was an avid runner over the years and attained a National Master Standing and many awards.

Dwight and Mona returned to Winner in 2012 and took up residence at the Golden Prairie Manor to be closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dwight is survived by his children: Daniel Schaeffer, Brian (Jan) Schaeffer, Lisa (Robert) Koskan, and Craig (Lori) Schaeffer, Grandchildren:  Brandie Johnson, Logan Schaeffer, Lindsey, Lacy, and Christopher (Sadie) Schaeffer, Shannon (Ronnie) Weir, Ryan and Devin (Kelsie) Koskan, Alex and Marlee Schaeffer and nine great-grandchildren.

Dwight is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, parents and step father, and Mona's parents, and his brothers Arnold and Calvin Schaeffer.
