Clyde Chambers, 81, of Colome, SD passed away at his home on Monday, May 12, 2014. Funeral service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 2:00pm at the United Methodist Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Winner from 6:00pm-7:00pm with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm. Clyde Chambers was born on January 14th, 1933 to Bert and Alice (Dummer) Chambers in Bonesteel, SD. He spent his early years near the Mule Head Ranch. In 1947, Clyde and his parents moved to Tripp Co. where they bought the Claus Luedemann's place. During his 4th grade year he lived near Stuart, NE where he worked for his room and board. He enjoyed helping with the cattle drives. After he graduated the 8th grade, about 14 years old, he stayed alone in a small shack, north of Bonesteel with just his horse, his dog, and his 30-30. His job was to go through the cattle, especially at night, to protect the cattle from the coyotes. When Clyde met Pearl Soles of Millboro, daughter of Dottie (McCloughan) Soles and William Soles, she was 15 years old. Clyde would ride his horse over to Pearl's place and then she would get on her horse and off they would go on their date. They joined in marriage on September 17th, 1953. Clyde was 21 and Pearl was 19 years old at the beginning of their life journey together. Immediately after the shower they left for a short honeymoon in the Black Hills and made their home in Central City. Clyde worked at the Homesteak Gold Mine in Lead, SD. Then they moved to Emmett, ID. Charlotte Arlene was born July 29th, 1954. Clyde and Marion Goslin worked for Edwin Goslin. One of the jobs they did was to drive a herd of cattle up to the Cascade Mountains. This was the experience of a life time for Clyde. In 1956, they moved to Nebraska where Clyde worked on a ranch for one year and moved to South Dakota when the ranch was sold. April 11, 1957 Cathalene Ann was born. For a brief time they moved back to Idaho where he worked at the Idaho Power Plant. Because of the altitude they moved back to SD. They rented a place south of Clearfield where they raised pigs and milked cows. Clyde was always on call for his dad. Whenever his dad would call, Clyde would take off right away to go down there. Some days Clyde would be at their place before 7:00am and sometimes not get home until after 9:00pm. By then, Pearl would have the 38 cows milked. May 19th, 1961 Sharon Eileen was born. Around 1965, Clyde and Pearl moved the family to the John Chleboun place and eventually bought it, which is still their home. In 1969 Clyde was named a SD Trophy Hunter by Boone and Crocket. In 1972 and 1973 Clyde served on the ASC Committee. One of Clyde's proudest moments was when he was chosen Elk of the Year in 1978-1979. 2001 Clyde became a life member of North America Hunting Club. Clyde was also on the Lake Township Board, Farmers Coop Board, Elks Board (also a member of the organization for 45 years), and a life member of the Elks National Foundation. In 2003 Clyde was diagnosed with West Niles Virus. It almost took his life, but Clyde was not willing to give in and fought the odds. In 2007, Clyde and Pearl received the Patriotic Americans award. His favorite pastimes were playing baseball, throwing horseshoes, dancing, hunting, and tracking the game. He loved to teach his children and grandchildren the art of tracking and hunting. Clyde liked to call Pearl, his "darling, my sweet, my growing pumpkin seed." He loved his wife and family with all his heart. He was such a great influence to his children and grandchildren. Clyde had many battles in his life, but he always held his head high and attacked each one head on. It never stopped him, no matter how difficult things got. Clyde was so proud of his place and watching over the cattle. Clyde passed away peaceful at home with Pearl at his side. Clyde is survived by his wife Pearl and his three daughters: Charlotte Deaver, Cathalene (Jack) Russell, Sharon (Dewey) Novotny. His grandchildren: Darcie Deaver (fiancée Chris Ward), Christopher Deaver, Stephanie (Shawn) Ray, Michelle (Jake) Almendinger, Cory (Melissa) VanMatre, Kevin (Shasta) VanMatre, Kelly VanMatre, Jaden Russell, Toni Novotny, and Cody Novotny. His Great Grandchildren: Averi Ray, Josephina Ray, Connor Almendinger, Heston Almendinger, Mara VanMatre, and Jaxon VanMatre. Preceding in death: His parents, Bert and Alice Chambers, Brother Wayne Chambers, Son-in-law Wayne Deaver, and many Aunts, Uncles and dear friends.
