Catherine Ambur, 97, of Winner, SD passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Facility in Winner, SD. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 at 11:00AM at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Catherine Ambur was born August 18, 1928 on the farm homesteaded by her father's parents in 1906 south of Presho, S.D. She was the youngest of the four children born to her parents Bernard and Betsy (Halvardsgaard) Dice. In 1943 the family moved to a farm north of Winner, Tripp County, S.D.
She attended first four grades at Allyn School in the country, then School in Presho through the 9th grade, then 10th grade at Pierre and graduating from Winner High School in 1945. After graduation worked as a Legal Secretary for six years; a homemaker from 1951 to 1972; and again, office work until 1976.
Catherine married Bernard Rice Oct 16, 1946 and then moved to Red Bluff, CA, where they lived until the death of her father in 1947, and then returned to Winner where Bernard started his own trucking business. He died in Oct 1949 when the plane he was piloting crashed at Bonesteel, S.D. Their children are daughter Helen born in August 1948 and son Alan born in November 1949.
In 1951 Catherine married Dennis Flynn and they lived at Dog Ear Lake until 1958 when Dennis became an Aerial Crop Sprayer and they moved to Winner. They had four children: Patricia, Dan, John and Dorothy and they divorced 1972.
In February 1976 Catherine married Lawrence Ambur and they made their home in Presho, SD. They traveled throughout the United States and other Countries.
She was a member of Winner Units of American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliary. Historian of the Lyman County Historical Society for many years. Also was Lyman County Cancer Crusade Chairman for several years. Member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Presho.
Survived by three daughters, Helen Bode of Great Falls, MT.; Patricia Flynn of San Antonio, TX; Dorothy Head of San Diego, CA; and two sons, Alan (Peggy) of Waxhaw, NC and Dan (Mary Carpenter) of Winner, SD; Three Step-children: Owen (Diane) Ambur; Susan (Joe) Weaver and Sonja Ambur; two sisters, Margaret Lewis of Hennepin, OK, and Dorothy Taylor of Oklahoma City, OK. 13 Grandchildren and 9 Step-Grandchildren; and many Great-Grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; husbands; Bernard, Dennis and Lawrence; one son, John in 1979 and Step-son Loren Ambur in 1985.
