Calvin Adel, 88, of Witten, SD passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in Winner, SD. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 2:00pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 15, from 5-7:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner, SD. Calvin William Adel was born in Winner, South Dakota on April 12, 1926 to William and Lura(Long) Adel. He was raised on the family farm near Witten. Cal attended Witten High School until his brother went into the service. At that time he left school to help his Dad on the farm. Cal returned to school a year later and graduated in 1946. Cal joined the Army in 1950 during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. Cal married his first and only love, Jean Elder on October 15, 1952 and were married for 62 years. To this union 5 children were born. He was active in the Witten American Legion, the Jordan Township Board and was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Witten. Cal loved farming and ranching and also enjoyed working with his horses! He was an avid card player with family and friends. He enjoyed taking his kids and grandkids fishing. Cal also loved it when his family came to visit, especially during the holidays. His hobbies were reading, keeping up with the news and visiting with friends.The most important part of his life was his family. His advice on love was to be nice, don't argue, be loyal and always say "I will" and "I do"! Calvin is survived by his wife Jean, children: Darla (Dave) Hosek of Lawrence, KS, Denice (Steve) Novotny of Winner, SD, Deb (Terry) Sharkey of Spearfish, SD, and Doug (Jessica) Adel of Sacramento, CA. 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren: Amy (John) Burke & Ethan, Blane, Kaytlen Sharkey; Kristi (Dana) Foreman & Madilyn, Abigail and Gracie, Kaylee Novotny; Alexandra, Haley and Luke Adel; Molly, Justin (Rebecca), Collin (Raquel) Hosek. Sister Marian Matson, brother-in-law Jack (Gladys) Elder, sister-in-law Avis (Clarence) VonEschen, and many nieces and nephews. Calvin was aslo preceded in death by his son Duane, parents Bill & Lura Adel, parents-in-law John (Elizabeth) Elder. Grandchildren, Mindy Sharkey and Jake Adel. Sister Blanche (Art) Stange and brother Sam (Pauline) Adel.
