Bonnie Tatum, 74, of Winner, SD passed away on June 2 nd , 2020 at her daughter's home in Letcher, SD while being on Hospice Care. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 10 th , 2020 at 2:00PM at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 9 th , 2020 from 5-7PM at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. Burial will be held at a later date.
Bonnie was born to John and Pearl (Ellerbroek) Koster on July 6 th , 1945 in Geddes, SD. She attended Hamilton School for 8 years. Bonnie was raised on the farm southwest of Platte till 1960 when mom and dad moved into Platte, SD. Bonnie married Wayne Hiemstra in 1963. To this union one daughter, Kimberly, was born. Bonnie married James Tatum in 1966 and one daughter Dawn was born in 1967.
The family lived in Platte till moving north of Mt. Vernon where they worked on farms for 20 years. During this time Bonnie obtained her GED and then went on to her LPN training from Mitchell Votech from 1978-1979. She worked at the Methodist Hospital as well as nursing homes. She loved taking care of her patients. She worked as a bus hostess for many years and saw all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. Her favorite state was Alaska.
Bonnie returned to Platte in 1992 where Bonnie designed and built the Gentle Touch Retired Living Center for the elderly. She ran that for 5 years before selling this to the Platte Hospital. Bonnie moved to Winner and continued her nursing career with Dr. Schramm clinic for 9 years, as well as opening Pickle B's Pub. In 2002 she became Exalted Ruler of the Winner Elk's Lodge until 2004. Bonnie retired due to medical reasons in 2006. She began sewing star quilts for Badlands Quilting, continuing this till her illness in 2020. Some of her hobbies were reading, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening flowers.
Bonnie is survived by her special friend, Jerry Dill, of Winner, SD; brother Deane Koster (Linda) of Wahoo, NE; sister Marilyn Tatum (Tom) of Platte, SD; daughters: Kim Vermeulen (Jeff) of Letcher, SD, and Dawn Johnson (Mike) of Belle Fourche, SD; grandchildren: Nicole Hansen, Travis Pollard (Melanie), Dustin Pollard (Ashley Kotilinek), Dallas Johnson (Dorene), Rylee Anderson (Dustin); great grandchildren: Sheridan, Brooklyn, & Lauryn Hansen, Remington & Kimber Johnson, Keira, Hannah, Ryder, & Lyndy Pollard, Ayden Baker, Damon & Mahlon Pollard; and many nieces and nephews.
Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, John and Pearl Koster; brothers: Leslie Koster & Marvin Koster; sister, June Garret; niece, Connie Koster; great grandsons: Jasper & Rhett Pollard; sister-in-law, Ginger Koster; brother-in-law, Bud Garret & her beloved dog, Lucky D.
