Barry Bridgman, 66, of Wessington Springs passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014 at 7:00pm at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, SD. A visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the memorial service on Wednesday from 5-7pm at the Mason Funeral Home. Barry Bridgman was born October 13, 1947, and died June 28, 2014 at the age of 66 years after a long battle with cancer. Barry grew up on a farm in rural Witten, South Dakota, the eldest of five boys. It was a wonderful place to grow up. Barry was an amazing athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball and track. He graduated from Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota, and played basketball throughout much of his college career, graduating in 1969. He later joked when having to get transcripts; that he had to get these from the correctional facility established in Springfield. Barry worked in sales in Omaha for many years, and while in Nebraska, acquired a lifelong love of the Cornhuskers. He later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and continued in retail and sales in a management position. In 2007, Barry returned to Witten, South Dakota to take care of his father on the family farm. He continued to manage the farm from 2007-2013. In 2013, he had to retire and continue his fight with cancer. He moved to Wessington Springs in 2013. During this time, he fought for medical reimbursement of syringes used to flush drainage ports. He won the fight, and won the appeal and joins the million dollar club . . . those persons winning cases resulting in millions of dollars in medical reimbursement for this type of treatment. Of course, Barry never saw a dollar of the millions of dollars paid to cover this type of medical care. Barry was also credited with coining the phrase Tethered to Technology (TTT) to describe societies' inability to function without being attached to electronic or digital or internet devices. In the last 10 years of his life, Barry became an avid runner, running in many 5K races, and even running in half marathons. He enjoyed timed runs up Harney Peak. While in Phoenix, his favorite runs were up Piestawa Peak, and in Salt Lake, Mt. Olympus. He will be greatly missed. He leaves surviving him his ex-wife Carol, son Bill, daughter-in-law Penny, grandson Benjamin, brothers Rick (Kate), Roger (Dawn), and Casey (Valinda), and many nieces and nephews and grandniece and grandnephew. Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold and Margaret Bridgman, brother Scott Bridgman and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children Jennifer and Nathan.
