Barbara Lorrayne (Stern) Nordstrom, born on October 2, 1945, near Johnstown, Nebraska, passed away on September 9, 2026.
Being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara’s life was a testament of love, dedication, and creativity.
Barbara was the daughter of Everett and Doris Stern and was raised near Johnstown, Nebraska. She began her education at Johnstown Public School before attending high school in Ainsworth, Nebraska. Her early years were marked by appreciation for her family and a love for creativity and the arts. On June 24, 1963, Barbara married Robert Nordstrom. Together, they shared 59 wonderful years, raising two children, Cheril (Tom) Meiners and Roger (Leslie) Nordstrom.
Their family grew with the blessing of five grandchildren: William (Jennie) Smith, Kristal (Mike) Sides, Teasha Torpy, Teah Labahn, and Tennae (Brad) Feyereisen, along with two great-grandchildren, Bethany Sides and a grandson soon to arrive in October.
Barbara’s career was as varied and vibrant as her personality. She worked at the Buffalo Trail Motel and held several positions at Taco Johns and McDonald’s.
After the loss of her brother-in-law, Edward, she returned to the family farm, offering her support wherever it was needed. Barbara and Robert later started Nordstrom Pheasant Hunting, which they operated for many years. Barbara continued to support her husband Robert when his health began to decline, eventually moving into town and retiring to care for him.
An artist at heart, Barbara was gifted in drawing and crafting. Her hobbies included ceramics, crocheting, embroidery, and puzzles. But perhaps her greatest joy was camping, an activity she and Robert enjoyed immensely. They spent countless weekends and days at campgrounds, creating lasting memories. Barbara’s grandchildren and great-grandchild were the light of her life. She loved them with immense pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, Everett and Doris, and other family members.
She leaves behind her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held on September 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Frist Christian Church, located at 326 Madison Street, Winner, SD.
As we remember Barbara, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will forever remain in our hearts. Her legacy of love, strength, and creativity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
