Archie Remmers, 90, of Winner, SD passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026 at the Winner Regional Long-Term Care Facility in Winner, SD. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Winner Methodist Church in Winner, SD. Burial will follow in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD at 3:00 PM MT. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
Archie was born on November 28, 1935, in Foxton Township in South Dakota to Arthur and Elaine Remmers. He was born on Thanksgiving Day at his grandpa and grandma Fuller's home while everyone else was eating Thanksgiving dinner. Archie attended grades 1-8 at Naples School and then attended Clark High School where he graduated in 1953. After graduation, he worked as a carpenter and then at the grain elevator and then went back into carpentry again. In September 1958, he was drafted into the Army and serviced until 1960. He was recalled back into the Army in 1961 when the Berlin Wall was built. He served 9 months in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri before being honorable discharged. Archie married Marlys Stanley on August 24, 1963. This union was blessed with 4 children: Doug, David, Brian and Melissa.
After Archie was discharged from the Army, he continued to work as a carpenter in Clark, SD area until he and Marlys moved their family to Winner, SD in 1987. There he worked for the Winner Regional Healthcare Center in the maintenance department for 22 years before retiring in 2009. Following retirement from Winner Regional, Archie spent 15 years volunteering for South Dakota State Parks. He was a maintenance volunteer at West Bend Recreation Area for a few years before becoming the campground host there alongside his wife, Marlys. Archie was an avid fisherman and spent many hours fishing for walleye on the Missouri River with his wife and his good friends, Greg and Roger.
Archie is survived by his children Doug Remmers, Brian (Karen) Remmers, and Melissa (Gary) Petersen, all of Winner, SD. Grandchildren Brody, Ayla, Tate (Payton), and Emmett Remmers; Makayla, Makenna (Cade Currier), Dalton, and Kacie Petersen. He is also survived by his siblings Wes (Judy) Remmers, Gary (Kathy) Remmers, Arlo (Colita) Remmers, Roger Remmers; sister-in-law Mavis Remmers, brother-in-law Loren Josephson as well as many nieces and nephews.
Archie is preceded in death by his wife Marlys, infant son David, his parents Arthur and Elaine Remmers, brother Carl Remmers, sisters; Dona Remmers and Karleen Josephson, as well as a brother in infancy. Archie is also preceded in death by his in-laws Keith and Audrey Stanley and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ken and Darla Popkes.
