A nna Jean Adel, known by family and friends as Jean, 87, of Witten South Dakota passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar Hospice Care at Lawrence, Kansas, where she was wintering with her daughter, Darla.
Jean was born on August 21, 1931 to John and Elizabeth (Dougherty) Elder in Winner.
She graduated from Witten High School in 1949 and attended Notre Dame business school in Mitchell for one year. She taught in the Carter area for 3 months before getting a job at the IRS in Aberdeen, SD.
Jean married Calvin Adel On October 15, 1952 and they were married for 62 years. They were blessed with 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Jean cherished being a farm wife, a mother & a friend to everyone. She loved the farm, her home, gardening, canning, sewing, cleaning, cooking, baking for others and especially her beautiful flowers. She was a member of the Treadle Tripper's Club, Catholic Daughters, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary, but the most important part of her life was her faith and family.
Jean taught, through her loving example, the importance and joy of family. To this end she persistently maintained many family traditions: summer reunions in the Black Hills, Christmas on the farm, baking kolaches and playing cards.
She was a loving wife, wonderful Mom, loving Grandma, best sister ever, caring friend and thoughtful neighbor. She always had time for others, with kind words and her beautiful smile, especially when they needed help or guidance.
Jean is survived by her children: Darla (Dave) Hosek of Lawrence, Kansas, Denice (Steve) Novotny of Winner, Deb (Terry) Sharkey of Spearfish, SD and Doug (Jessica) Adel of Sacramento, CA. Grandchildren and great grandchildren: Kristi (Dana) Foreman & Madilyn, Abigail and Gracie, Kaylee (Ian) Tindall & Stevie, Amy (John) Burke & Ethan, Blane (Leah) Sharkey, Kaytlen (Scott) Assman, Alexandra Adel, Haley Adel, Luke Adel, Molly Hosek, Justin (Rebecca) & Orion Hosek, Collin (Raquel) Hosek. Sister Avis (Clarence) VonEschen, Sister-in-law Gladys Elder and many nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Calvin, son Duane, parents John and Elizabeth Elder, parents in-law Bill and Lura Adel, grandchildren Mindy Sharkey and Jake Adel, brother Jack Elder, Brother & Sister-in-laws, Sam & Pauline Adel, Blanche & Art Stange, Marian & Don Matson & infant brother Billy.
