Obituary

Adeline Ardayne Vavra, 95, of Winner South Dakota passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Facility, Winner, SD. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Winner Methodist Church from 6-7:00 pm with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Winner Methodist Church. A burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery.

Adeline was born May 24, 1928, in Parkston, SD to Chancey and Alice (Adkins) Hansen. She attended country school in Carter, SD through the 8th grade.  Began a career working for Ma Bell where she made lifelong friends.  She married Fred Vavra on November 27, 1948, in Winner, SD. To this union, 5 daughters and one son were born.  They lived in rural Colome, SD and eventually moved to Winner, where they spent the rest of their lives. Adeline worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) for 32 years where she enjoyed working in the nursey and became a "legendary swaddler".

Adeline enjoyed getting together with the ladies, playing cards, and sharing coffee and stories.  She never met a stranger.  She could strike up a conversation with anyone.  You couldn't go anywhere around town without Adeline stopping to talk to someone who she remembered when they, their kids or even grandkids were born, and she helped care for them.  She enjoyed the friendships she made through the church and served on many committees.  She loved making pies for special occasions.  Most of all she enjoyed hosting her family for the holidays.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and the Winner Methodist Church.

She is survived by daughter Vikkie Vavra, Gillette, WY, daughter Wendy (Bob) Heath, Winner, SD, daughter Deena (Mark) Haight, Laughlin, NV, son Douglas (Jolene) Vavra, Winner, SD, daughter Lisa (Bryan) Mohr, Sioux Falls, SD, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren,  6 great, great grandchildren, two sisters, Gladys Elder, Carter, SD, Margaret Ann Leetch, Summerset, SD, and numerous nephew and nieces.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Fred, daughter Deborah Oster, Great Granddaughter Ema Manzer, her parents, three brothers Leonard, Zike, Lewis, four sisters, Audrey Clubb, Ardith Franciscato, Helen Kirsch, and Mary Lou Bernard.

Adeline will be greatly missed, and her memories live on in her family and friends.
