Dorothy Marie (Grim) Novotny, 82, of Colome, SD passed away on January 16, 2010 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, after a very sudden illness.

Dorothy was born on November 28, 1927 on a farm near Dallas, SD. She was the daughter of Steve and Faye (Elliott) Grim. She was the third child of five, and the only daughter. She attended school in Dallas, SD. Other than a couple of years working in California, she spent her entire life in or near Tripp County.

She married Edmund Albert Novotny of Colome, SD on April 18, 1950. They were the first couple married in the newly built Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD. To this union five children were born.

Dorothy worked as the secretary at the Tripp County Extension Office for 12 years. She also was the main cook for the hunting lodge for over 25 years. Dorothy enjoyed all the visits with the hunters every fall. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She loved gardening, cooking and sewing. Dorothy loved to make quilts for her family that she designed herself. She made a special quilt for each grandchild as their graduation gift. She was very artistic and poetic and received numerous awards for her poems.

Dorothy is survived by her five children, Robert, Fort Worth, TX; Richard, San Antonio, TX; Stephen (Denice), Charles (Tina) Winner, SD, and Dannie, San Francisco, CA, grandchildren, Kristi (Dana) Foreman, Greeley, CO, Kaylee Novotny, Aurora, CO, Tim (fiancé Sarah) Meldrum, Lincoln, NE, and Zachary Novotny, Winner, SD, two great-grandchildren Madilyn and Abigail Foreman.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edmund, her parents and her brothers, John, Jim, Dean and Virgil Grim.

Her kind heart, wonderful smile and sharp wit captured the hearts of many. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grand children with all her heart and she will be dearly missed.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 21, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, SD. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 21, from 4-6 p.m. at the church with a 5 p.m. prayer service.
